The best way to play anything in life is assess the overall situation and assess your specific situation. Just because the overall situation is such and other people are able to play it a certain way, you may not. Think about the situation and how the short-term choices fit into your long-term goals and how to utilize your current capabilities to play that situation in your favor then make a rational decision.

Whatever your innate type is, you can reverse engineer the traits by identifying the type of demographic groups or subgroups that closely align with your characteristics to find out what your typical real-world “use case” or “applications” are. If you are the sneaky type, you probably do well in lying or fake politeness which probably means you could be a good lawyer, politician or is good at bidding your time to instigate something bigger like these kinds of people usually do. Choose the company and boss that needs you the most. Remember, there is no vacuum between company and boss as the company hires certain types of employees and the employees adapt to how the company operate. I will say this though. If a company truly needs you, there is a high probably of them asking you easy interview questions. If a company scrutinize you with a lot of questions, that company is likely not right for you from a probability standpoint. In terms of negotiating offers, I generally believe if the company really wants you, paying you reasonably above market rate is typically not an issue. These companies will likely not even ask you your salary expectations if they are big companies and really want you. If they really want you, it usually means the hiring manager already told HR you are the one, if they can’t get you, they are either going to put the position on hold or restart the hiring process later on. Remember the interview always starts at first contact even if you are speaking with their janitor. Companies that want you will give you the highest title possible that is within their structure and within your abilities.
Getting an internal promotion or raise is never the best way to move up. It almost never works out from an ROI standpoint for the employee. Think about the time you first met your future romantic partner and how you felt. Then think about what happens after you started to live with each other. Yes, that. This is why moving up internally will never workout well versus moving to another place when the time is ripe. In general, if you have options, choose careers that allow you to have the best exit options with lots of alternatives. Choose industries and fields that are large so you can leverage different companies against themselves to get yourself the best opportunities. People and organizations want you because you are desirable and continue to innovate to be even more desirable. Get yourself into the best position to metaphorically say FU to anyone and anything that makes you unhappy the moment it happens. Always leave on your own terms. Only show loyalty or benefit others when it benefits you to fein altruism. Everyone is out for themselves. Anyone who wants you to sacrifice your own interests to satisfy others when you are unwilling to are deceptive wannabe be pickup artists that don’t deserve you. Remember, everything is transactional. Relationships are built upon many transactional, trust building exercises that some people mistaken for “networking.” Everything is about you and you are the center of all known and unknown universes. This is how capitalism works when you have control over people’s finances and resources. You don’t need a lot of resources to control your destiny. You just need enough resources to bridge yourself to a time when you are able to fund your own existence.
