I recently created the United States Alternative Assets Collectible Cards Composite Index, Alternative Assets Collectible Cards Composite Index, Alternative Assets Collectibles Composite Index and the United States Alternative Assets Collectibles Composite Index for my own entertainment so I can track the growth of a select number of high potential collectible cards and potentially other types of collectibles in the future that I personally own. The current index value is at exactly $1,000 USD as of the commencement of this index on July 26, 2026. To be included in this index, a card must be readily, liquidly and abundantly tradable on the open markets across the world in large volume, estimated production quantity of 100,000 or more of that particular card at the time of issuance. This means cards in the index cannot be scarce or hard to find, must have global popularity and must be fungible, basically have to be base cards. Translations, a massively produced base card. Open markets can include various online and offline marketplaces as well as conventions and trading between collectors such as during trade nights. Any card included on this index must be produced by one of the major collectible cards producing companies that have a continuous history of producing cards. Card fractionalization are not included in the composite. No single card value at the point of inclusion should exceed 20% of the updated value of the index. In addition, the aggregate value of multiple copies of the same card at the point of inclusion cannot exceed 30% of the index’s updated value as a grouped asset class. At any given point, the index cannot contain less than 5 unique cards and cards of 3 different athlete/charter/entity/thing. No card(s) of any one athlete/charter/entity/thing even when on the same card with other athlete/charter/entity/thing can be more than 50% of the index updated value. Updated value meaning total value of the index after making inclusion and/or exclusion decisions for a certain index transaction activity. No more than 50 unique cards can be included in the index. All cards in the index are ungraded, raw cards presumed to be at near mint condition. Index value is calculated based on US dollars serving as its functioning currency and not based on points. The index time zone is US Eastern Time. The index value based on a particular date is calculated based on the approximate value at the end of the night of the date in question.
Inclusion or exclusion decisions are based on a cocktail of factors but the ultimate goal is to simulate a risk-adjusted return, taking into account concepts such as alpha and beta, that is on par or exceed mainstream large cap+ US equity index returns such as S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average index. Obviously the collectible cards space is a ten plus billion market which is dwarfed by the nearly $100 trillion dollar US equity market alone and the nearly $200 trillion global equity market. When a card that was previously included in the index and is now excluded from the index, card(s) of equal dollar value to the card being replaced is added to the index. Current value, inclusion value and exclusion value are all based on market data I computed while making numerous adjustments to reflect discounts required to price in risk adjustments and priced in transaction fees, average global retail market value, wholesale value and liquidating value. All of these take into account of online e-commerce sold transactions and listings, OEM to distributor transaction trends and offline pricing such as the ones from big box retail, LCS, conventions and trade value among collectors. This means I am not simply using my acquisition cost as the inclusion value but rather a “standard cost” using the above mentioned data points as reference to form a basis for “market value” that covers both inclusion value, exclusion value and current value. Index value reporting will occur once a month around mid-month. To prevent window dressing, any inclusions and/or exclusions after the month of the index’s founding will occur at once on the same calendar day in the month and no later than the 10th calendar day of the month. This index has no divisor of any kind and no reinvestments of any kind is conducted as cards don’t pay dividends nor does it split into two or more identical cards. No new investment money into the fund occurs, no payout of any kind occurs and no compounded interest occurs. Index is not adjusted for inflation, deflation nor purchasing power. Basically, the whole point of this index is to see how much $1,000 in initial cards investment can generate on an average annual basis and how much it will grow into over time.
