In terms of ROI at certainty threshold (measuring value based on a presumed high probability event), Maxey is the absolute top of that list. If you are into basketball cards, the best value is in the Sixers superstars. Whatever superstar you are thinking of now is likely overvalued. Previously, Maxey was perceived as a high-scoring low draft pick on an underachieving team who won’t win anything and will likely squander his youth as he inch toward 30. In a matter of two months, that narrative has changed to an inspiring underdog who will only be 25 at the started of the 2026-2027 NBA season leading a team of superstars. Here’s the deal. Most likely, the Sixers will have four all-stars this year, the fourth player likely an injury replacement. VJ Edgecombe will develop though his development will likely become a facilitator than a leader on a win now team. Maxey will probably be an all-star for the next three seasons if he is healthy. Chances are, he will likely win at least one NBA championship and get a FIBA or Olympics gold. I personally would either not add any Lamelo and Edwards rookie cards or part way large collection of these cards. The focal point will be the Sixers and LeBron’s championships. The Celtics are depleted, the Knicks by delaying a White House visit likely already irked rich people or certain rich person or two and the Heats are too chemistry-less to contend within the next three years. OKC and San Antonio can duke it out but these internationals don’t help the league make Sixers 2026-2028 bucks.

With the worsening of the Giant Lizard country’s economy, internationals are no longer all the rage in the second and third world. Truth be told, even if Morey was leading the Sixers, Giant Lizard won’t do much due to their internal and disposal income issues where they had to lose face by begging FIFA to give them the India treatment on lowering fees for broadcasting rights. Edgecombe base rookie cards are basically costing around the same as Maxey rookie cards from the similar brands. I think Edgecombe will benefit greatly from being on a super team, though his growth on the leadership side of things will take a dramatic drop. While Edgecombe is being hyped, I would not be long on his rookie cards at the current price levels at the moment. I think his base rookie cards are likely only worth about 60% of the hyped up value right now. Anyone who played even a year within the era of a GOAT in their respectively sport has an extremely low likelihood of becoming the GOAT. The major exception is when you are not really the GOAT but a hyped six rounder with a gate specialist dedicated to your patriotism when they needed such a patriot. When they don’t need such a patriot, a cardinal friendly fire away to the abyss. When sports achievements potentially get mixed with politics, history usually never forget and will eventually reveal when the time is right. All this is to say no new GOAT will be minted in LeBron’s era except for LeBron by the time he retires in approximately three to five years. If you look at the pipeline at all levels including the elementary level, you don’t hear of any generational phenom that’s earth shattering in basketball do you?

That means when LeBron retires, the NBA may be in a very precarious situation where its GOAT retires and most of its current best and most legendary players also retires within LeBron or before he does. Think about what superstar are actually in the league now and which ones will likely retire very soon. That’s LeBron, KD, Curry, Harden and Kawhi with many of the leagues’ recent generational legends already retired. Besides the internationals who won’t be GOATs for many reasons, we are talking a generation led by Edwards and Lamelo……The realistic chase for the next GOAT super card is effectively over. The real play in basketball card collecting now is small-ball value investing. LeBron’s rookie cards can get expensive. Embiid is great but…..and that’s the real problem if you know why I put those dots instead of saying something. Jaylen Brown already got his flowers from a chase card valuation standpoint. His biggest issue is probably being too intelligent for the just dribble please crowd. Many Sixers bench players like Anfernee Simons could easily start on other teams but won’t be superstars. From a value to value perspective, there isn’t a single player whose base rookie cards are around a dollar or less that you can get a better penny for penny value including LeBron derivative cards like Bronny James rookie base cards.

The window to load up on Maxey inexpensive rookie cards likely is only one week max, most probably only a few days before shadow raises where prices may not reflect on sold but volume on listings and sold effectively decrease significantly due to anticipatory value rise. Maxey, if Sixers and LeBron get the storybook ending, will likely be perceived as a Von Miller type and could optimistically finish his career luckily with more rings while doing almost nothing like Shady Mc. Maxey’s base rookie cards are still massively underrated likely due to his association with Embiid……for completely legally permissible but potentially culturally unacceptable reasons for many fans that may or may not irk them about Embiid. Maxey is probably better than Jalen Brunson raw talent wise at this point. Sixers likely need to figure out what to do with Embiid before drama ensues in the locker room. The B scratchers and Lazy As don’t get along period due to various reasons including internalized ones. While I do think Sixers will overcome all these potential issues with talent, Embiid probably makes sense as a potential trade piece for Davis or KAT. The last thing the Sixers need is a Brooklyn KD reminiscing Warriors ring chasing except if he were a former foreigner on Team USA just to chase a ring while his countrymen jeers. I think Maxey will be a glorified Kyle Lowry with Brunson attitude type of player with way more potential upside. LeBron appears to do quite well when there is good chemistry with his teammates. Excellent dynamic between the point guard and his teammates is probably one of the most important aspects to winning along with the dynamics between the coach/organization and  the players. I still think Pistons was and still is LeBron’s best landing destination from a holistic perspective considering potential to get a max, but I also wrote Sixers being the best destination from a pure basketball standpoint.
