Magic: The Gathering MTG Marvel and UNO Elite NFL cards are the ultimate sleepers? The Permanent Contrarian’s view on investing in alternative assets.

Yes and yes. These are extremely underrated even if they had high production runs. There is clearly a market for cards crossovers between popular brands historically speaking and as we speak. One thing I always found interesting is that in many cases, the cards that were modest but not huge successes at first release have a good probability of being worth more later on. I believe this has to do with the attrition rate of the cards, people’s treatment of cards at various price points and etc. Many 2024 UNO Elite NFL sealed box of cards are literally still available online around five to six dollars. Yes, there might be a debate about its rookie card situation or lack of it depending on how you define rookie cards, I think the holo foils especially the wild card foils of Mahomes and other elite players are very underrated right now. The 2024 edition was released in late August of 2024, which means it is technically before the official regular season start of September 2024.

This is an absolutely important distinction in later years when collectors build up narratives on these cards when they become more well-known and more sought-after especially if Mahomes becomes the GOAT. Brady’s biggest mistake of his career is his overexposure of his brand after his retirement. Truth be told he was already one of the weakest GOAT in major global sports and frankly American gridiron football is just too violent for most countries to accept as their initial payouts due to their non existence market for the sport will not be able to compensate for such violence one must endure to become truly good. Brady could also be one of the first GOAT in a major sport to have his GOAT status taken away from him by another athletes who played against him for a significant number of games in the same era. If you get your GOAT status taken away from you within a decade or two, you probably aren’t a true GOAT and definitely not an eternal GOAT or the GOAT of GOATs. Marvel cards do quite well and have a history of collabs. Think about the 1997 Skybox Metal Universe Marvel collab cards. Many of these cards even in raw are in the hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

MTG Marvel and UNO Elite NFL are the ultimate sleepers.

UNO is a huge IP. Think about the 1968 Topps Game cards featuring sports superstars in baseball and football and the WOTC 2002 NFL Showdown cards. These are widely accepted as legitimate sports cards. It’s not too farfetched to imagine with collabs will one day be quite valuable especially in a set featuring possible GOATs and possible very rare cards with a super small print run. I think if you can buy these boxes near their MSRP at release date, you could do very well. I personally don’t like to keep sealed boxes mostly because of economics. Sealed products only do well because of the potential value in its boxes. With increasing more technological development in this space such as AI and X-ray scanning, the mystery factor in sealed will increasingly shift to future valuations of stars and less about the mystery box experience. Keeping cards in sealed boxes also created significant risk to the cards themselves due to temperature variations and other factors such as sticking.

In the age of AI, the real money is not in information asymmetry, it’s mostly in information analytics. Very few people make it because of purely luck or due to gambling anyway. The real money is in consistency and discipline when implementing a brilliant strategy when you are brilliant yourself. This is the biggest difference between the Wall Street people and the basement hardcore people in this hobby. Unfortunately neither has the absolute advantage right now as the market is not big enough for the whales to invest in infrastructure plus the stigma and losing street cred of being a potential idiot for being in the same market as the basement people. The basement people started all this and have a lot of time, but don’t have the capital, knowledge nor discipline to really make it big. This is where the market is at the moment. I do anticipate the situation will eventually change due to many new developments in this space by all kinds of different people and groups who are doing this separately/anonymously. The gap will probably be bridged soon but just not now.
